Meet The Team!

We are the 2024 Oklahoma State Space Cowboys team. Our mission is the Argonia Cup high powered rocket competition held each year. Each member is a graduating senior in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University, and this competition is our senior design project for Spring 2024. Below is more information about each team member, where we are from, our experience brought to the project, and what our plans for the future are!

Josh Klingman

  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
  • Flower Mound, TX.
  • 2 years of rocketry experience as a hobby and for research through OSU and Honeywell.
  • Team Lead, focusing on full rocket integration, advising subteams and maintaining backend of the project.
  • Awaiting a move to Witchita, KS to pursue an opportunity with Textron as a Quality Engineer for metal bonding and composites.

Structures Team

The Structures subteam consists of Caden Mincey, Tommy Hosty, Josh Klingman, and subteam lead Brett Winter. The role of the structures team is to design and build the payload integration systems with regard to packing efficiency and structural integrity while avoiding vibrational issues. Furthermore, the structures team is in charge of developing the Computer Aided Design (CAD) models for the team and in turn, the manufacturing of any systems that rely on additive manufacturing techniques.

Brett Winter

  • Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.
  • Bristow, OK.
  • Experience with additive and subtractive manufacturing. 
  • Structures Team Leader. Working on payload integration and securement to insure safe flight. Additionally, heading up research and operations of the X-Winder tube windings.
  • Awaiting a move to Tulsa, OK to start work as a Project Engineer for ZEECO, managing the construction of flare combustion systems.

Launch Role

Sustainer-Payload Integration and Securement. Additionally assisted with sustainer ebay attachment on the pad.

Caden Mincey

  • Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

  • Some materials/CAD background through previous internships.
  • Structures team member, working on payload and nose cone design, CFD for fin analysis, and CAD assistance.
  • After graduation, I'll be moving to OKC and starting work as a Mechanical and Piping Engineer with the Burns and McDonnell Water group.

Launch Role

Packing recovery systems including chutes, nomex, and shock chord and integrating them into the rocket. Verifying nose cone connections to chute, ebay, and forward eyebolt.

Tommy Hosty

  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
  • Oklahoma City, OK.
  • Experience in rocketry from Tripoli Rocketry Level 1 certification and experience with 3D printing.  Extensive background in CAD with Solidworks from past projects and internships.
  • Structures team member, CAD specialist, and working on payload optimization, model simulation, boat tail, and other component design.
  • Post graduation I will be pursuing a career in the space industry.  I'm particularly interested in working at NASA, but would be thrilled to work at any company that shares my passion for space technologies and exploration.

Aero Team

The Aero subteam consists of Jarrett Schwarz, Jordan Block, Charlie Fett, Nick Sweeney and subteam lead Ben Klingman. The focus of the Aero subteam is to design the rocket and manufacture the composites required for the build. The main materials being used are fiberglass and carbon fiber, fabric weave for flat pieces, and fillament tow for custom wound tubes. The Aero subteam also focuses heavily on materials research and testing to optimize our fabrication methods, material properties and manufacturing process. 

Ben Klingman

  • Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.
  • Flower Mound, TX.
  • Experience working roughly 2 years on campus rocket projects and personal certifications. Worked simultaneously on composite and aerostructure fabrication for bullet racing FSAE team.
  • Aero design lead, working on simulation design and iteration of our rocket design. Applying composite experience to manufacture carbon fiber parts for the rocket. Full intergration of rocket componets and booster ignition.
  • Following an internship in quality control of aerospace parts, will be starting a position in Wichta Kansas as a Quality Assurance Engineer at Textron.

Charlie Fett

Jarrett Schwarz

  • Post graduation I will be pursuing a career in aerospace, energy, or wherever life takes me. Would love to contribute my work to any field that helps advance our country and humankind.

Jordan Block

Avionics Team

The Avionics subteam consists of Natalie Thornton, Logan Thornton, and subteam lead Robert Paddack. The role of the avionics team is to design and build the systems that control the various functions of the rocket, such as stage seperation, motor ignition, parachute deployment, and recovery. 

Robert Paddack

  • Mechanical and Aerospace engineering.

  • Experience in hands-on engineering projects through internship, and soldering experience from personal projects.
  • Avionics subteam lead, flight logic, recovery systems, and stage separation.
  • Planning on attending OSU for a Master's in aerospace engineering.

Launch Role

Prepare and assemble avionics bays for launch, operate ground station to ensure computers are operating correctly, and operate RF receiver during sustainer recovery.

Natalie Thornton

  • Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

  • Experience in building robots from scratch and coding them for autonomous and remote control use. Also soldering experience through personal projects.
  • Avionics team member. Designing avionics sleds, configuring flight computers, building e-bays.
  • After graduation I will be moving to Oahu, Hawaii for a few years and will pursure a career in the aerospace industry.

Logan Thornton

  •  After graduation I will be working as a mechanical engineer at Millenium International in Lee's Summit, MO before  commisioning as a 2d Lt in the USAF as a Pilot trainee this upcoming summer/fall.
